The surprising key to a fulfilling and organized life
Beyond the corporate grind...
During my 30-year-long corporate career, I was trapped in a relentless schedule, always hustling to succeed in my job(s).
I bet you know exactly what I mean...
I kept dreaming about freedom...
Freedom from gruesome tasks...
Freedom from pointless meetings...
Time to relax and unwind without guilt...
Freedom from the tyranny of schedules...
I thought all this was stifling my creativity and holding me back from what I really wanted to do.
Turns out, I was only partially right.
Once I put my work on autopilot and stopped pouring my heart and soul into my then-job, a whole new world of free time opened up.
And when I finally left that job...
Whoo-hoo! I thought I'd made it.
A complete laissez-faire attitude to life.
But then... I stopped scheduling activities.
My days turned into a mushy mess.
Laziness crept in, and the less I did, the less I wanted to do.
I was like a kid who'd never seen candy, suddenly let loose in a candy store.
And guess what? I got sick.
Clearly, this wasn’t the way to live either.
Then, I stumbled upon a 25-year study by the National Institute of Mental Health.
The results blew my mind.
The best predictor of who would live until 81? Highly organized behavior.
This revelation changed everything for me. It's not just about freedom from the corporate grind; it's about structuring your freedom to truly thrive.
Betty Friedan writes(1):
Of all fifteen variables studied, two were found to be as good as all the variables taken together: the degree of organization and complexity of a person’s daily behavior and cigarette smoking.
These two variables correctly predicted about 80% of both survivors and non-survivors.
…
The link between greater organization of behavior and survival makes biological sense. “The central nervous system influences other organs through neuronal and hormonal controls that affect the development of fatal conditions.
